What Is Arthritis?

arthritis 2

Arthritis is a broad term covering several joint conditions. Osteoarthritis commonly involves age-related or load-related change and may cause pain, stiffness and reduced movement. Rheumatoid arthritis, gout and other inflammatory conditions are different and require medical diagnosis and management.

Osteopathic or chiropractic care does not reverse arthritis, but it may help some people manage associated musculoskeletal pain, maintain mobility and feel more confident with activity. Following assessment, care may include gentle joint mobilisation, soft-tissue techniques, advice on pacing and an individual programme for mobility and strength.

Treatment is adapted to the person’s diagnosis, health and current symptoms and should complement, not replace, GP or specialist care. A joint that is suddenly hot, red, swollen or extremely painful, particularly with fever or illness, requires prompt medical assessment. We will refer when the presentation suggests inflammation, injury or another condition that needs investigation.
