What Is Neuralgia?

Neuralgia means pain experienced along the course of a nerve. It may feel burning, shooting, electric or hypersensitive and can have several causes, including irritation or compression of a nerve, previous injury, infection or an underlying medical condition.

Assessment begins with a detailed history and may include testing movement, strength, reflexes and sensation. The aim is to identify whether there is a mechanical component that may be suitable for conservative care and, equally importantly, whether medical investigation is needed. Where appropriate, treatment may address related joint restriction, muscle tension and movement patterns, supported by advice on activity and self-management.

Osteopathy does not treat every cause of neuralgia. New or progressive weakness, widespread numbness, facial weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, saddle numbness or severe unexplained symptoms require urgent medical assessment. If the findings are outside our scope, we will refer the patient to their GP or another appropriate service.
