What Is Neck Pain?
Neck pain can arise from muscles, joints, discs or irritated nerves and may be influenced by work, sleep, previous injury, stress or prolonged positions. Symptoms may remain local or be accompanied by pain, tingling or numbness into the shoulder or arm.
An appointment includes a history and examination of movement, strength and, where relevant, neurological function. Treatment is tailored to the findings and may involve soft-tissue techniques, gentle mobilisation, carefully selected manipulation, exercise and advice about workstations, activity and self-management.
Most mechanical neck pain can be managed conservatively, but some presentations need medical assessment. Seek urgent help after significant trauma or where neck pain is accompanied by severe or unusual headache, fever, new weakness, problems with balance, speech or vision, collapse, or rapidly progressive neurological symptoms. We will explain the clinical reasoning and refer whenever treatment is not appropriate.
