What Is Tennis Elbow?
Tennis elbow is pain and tenderness around the outer elbow, often linked to repeated gripping, lifting, racquet sports, manual work or prolonged computer use. Symptoms can make everyday activities such as opening a jar, carrying a bag or shaking hands uncomfortable.
Assessment considers the elbow as well as the wrist, shoulder, neck and the activities that load the affected tendon. Management may include advice on temporarily modifying aggravating tasks, progressive loading exercises and, where appropriate, soft-tissue techniques, joint mobilisation or shockwave therapy for selected persistent cases.
Recovery can take time because tendons adapt gradually. The plan is reviewed against function and symptoms rather than relying on a fixed number of sessions. Sudden severe pain after injury, significant swelling, loss of movement, weakness or neurological symptoms may require further investigation or referral.
