What Is Joint Pain?
Joint pain may arise from overload, injury, age-related change, inflammation or symptoms referred from another area. The location of pain alone does not always identify the cause, so assessment considers how the problem began, aggravating factors, medical history, movement, strength and the function of nearby joints and muscles.
Where a mechanical musculoskeletal problem is identified, care may include joint mobilisation, soft-tissue techniques, advice on activity and a graded exercise programme. The aim is to improve comfort and function while helping the patient understand how to manage the problem between appointments.
A hot, swollen or red joint, fever, inability to bear weight after injury, significant deformity or rapidly worsening pain requires prompt medical assessment. Persistent or unexplained joint pain may also need GP review or investigation. We will explain when treatment is appropriate and when another healthcare route is safer.
