Whiplash Injuries 2

A road-traffic collision can place rapid forces through the neck, back, shoulders and surrounding soft tissues. Symptoms may include pain, stiffness, headache, reduced movement or muscular guarding and can sometimes develop after the initial event.

Medical assessment should come first after a significant collision, particularly where there was loss of consciousness, severe headache, neurological symptoms, chest or abdominal pain, suspected fracture or worsening symptoms. Once serious injury has been excluded, an osteopathic or chiropractic assessment can consider movement, joint and muscle function and how the symptoms affect daily activity.

Where treatment is appropriate, it may include gentle manual techniques, advice on movement and a graded return to normal activity. The plan is adapted to irritability and recovery rather than using a fixed protocol. We do not provide medico-legal conclusions through a routine treatment page; patients needing reports for insurers or solicitors should ask about this separately.
