What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica describes pain, tingling, numbness or weakness along the course of the sciatic nerve, usually affecting the buttock and leg. Symptoms can arise when a nerve is irritated near the lower back or pelvis, although other musculoskeletal problems can produce referred leg pain that feels similar.
Assessment may include spinal and hip movement, muscle strength, reflexes and sensation to help identify the likely source and severity. Where conservative care is appropriate, treatment may combine gentle manual techniques, advice on activity and individually selected exercises. If examination suggests that imaging or specialist assessment is needed, we will arrange or recommend referral.
Urgent medical assessment is required if symptoms include new bladder or bowel disturbance, numbness around the genitals or saddle area, rapidly progressive leg weakness, symptoms in both legs or severe unremitting pain with systemic illness. These features are uncommon but should not be ignored.
